The spacing rules we check
- Beds: about 24 inches of open floor beside each side and at the foot of the bed (Sleep Foundation).
- Sofa and coffee table: 12 to 18 inches between them (Wayfair; Raymour & Flanigan suggests about 18 inches).
- Walkways: 30 to 36 inches for main paths through a room (Raymour & Flanigan). We flag any gap between two pieces, or between a piece and a wall, that is wider than 0 but under 30 inches.
- Dining tables: at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides, so chairs can be pulled out (Living Spaces).
- Rugs: about 18 inches of floor showing between a large rug and the walls (Room & Board).
Sizes start from the typical dimensions on our bed, rug and furniture pages. Change any piece to the exact size of the one you are buying. The planner is a guide: measure your own room, doors and furniture before you order.
